Destroyer 666 – Phoenix Rising

Destroyer 666 - Phoenix Rising Destroyer 666 is a band from Australia that plays a blend of thrash and black, and in this particular album, comes close to perfecting it. The songs combine the cold feel of Black Metal with the riffs, the solos and more melodic approach of Thrash. Throughout the album, a song-based approach is maintained. This makes the songs more memorable. The opener (Rise of the Predator) is a solid, fast number and sets the tone and expectations for the rest of the album. Layered thick with a real raw power and drive, the polished (though not over done) sound of the band jumps right out at you with intensity and finesse. The next two songs, however, while good, are just not great. Not to worry, here comes " I am the Wargod", one of the best songs in the album. Fast, catchy, melodic and has amazing lyrics as well. You cannot help but thrash on with the song. Up next is "Eternal Glory of War". This was the song which introduced me to the band, in Blackened compilation. The stomping feet of soldiers, the melody, the instantly hum-able chorus, the almost-anthemic feel makes this a winner all the way. "Lone wolf Winter" is another amazing song, starting as a normal, fast, no-holds-barred number …but towards the end there’s a beautiful change in the tempo, making it stand out. The last two songs are thrashy, melodic, feature a lot of soloing..in short, great. Overall, this is a great album. These guys have made great "songs" (rather than just an assortment of blast beats), both retaining the aggression as well as bring forth melody in the music. Check it out!!
