Varathron – Walpurgisnacht

Varathron - Walpurgisnacht There are many bands which have been overlooked, and have not been given a twice – thought by this extreme metal community in which some of us have our contributions, words, promotions and our other belongings in. Well, to express my views clearly, let me simply state that this release being so far the BEST of Varathron, is underestimated. Not many know about this great band hailing from Greece. When one talks about Greek Metal, Bands like Rotting Christ and Necromantia come to our lips first, Why not Varathron? Varathron are one of those very silent bands which take up quiet some time, But unleash their top grading music, which can surely be compromised to the time they spend in creating their works, in short worth the wait ! Its really difficult to figure out which category this band falls in. I would say : This Greek metal band plays Dark Black-Death metal. Varathron did build their pavement with unforgettable demos like "Procreation of Unaltered Evil" And "Genesis of Apocryphal Desire", Yeah ofcourse im not missing out their split with Necromantia entitled " Black Arts Lead to Everlasting Sins". These previous contributions did bring forth or rather articulate their darkened music. The band then in 1995 finally released this opulence compilation called "Walpurgisnacht." The sound this cd holds is quiet similiar to Rotting Christ,Septic Flesh. High Flying Melodies and Astounding Vocals all in combination is what this cd has to offer. The guitar works arent technical except for the solo’in parts. Not forgetting, the 5th rack " Birthrise Of The Graven Image" that has this beautiful solo, its memorable, and surely something you can go whistling with. Another example is the instrumental towards the end of the cd " Sic Transit Gloria Mundi", allow them to display their talent! The rhythm guitar is kept intense, as well as melodic and the distortion it holds has this distinctive greek death metal sound. Good riffing all throughout. Well the drums and keyboards do also mark their significance in these diverse song structures. Dont expect the keys to run like Dimmu Borgir and Children of Bodom, Keys are placed where felt necessary. Its done to perfection, retaining the sound to a misty and an imaginary flow of dark winds whispering away in a fogy night. Check out this instrumental "Redeunt Saturnia Regna", and youll know exactly what im talking about. The songs tend to deviate from mid tempo to fast notes. Certain breaks have been employed as well, filling up the background with amazing ambient peices of bass/key/guitar notes, and then maximum backup is given by the drums, guitars and the keys rendering an overall thoughtful feeling to the listener. Great effort ! Evil voices unleashed by Necroabyssious are always going to haunt you. Unlike high pitched shrieks and screams coming out echoing from far away tunnels ;The vocalist delivers his words in a deep blazing throat manner. And that really fits in well with the remaining shadowy sounds. The songwritings should give you reflections of the unread evil verses, clenching you with an aura of dark clouds, bloody seas and perpertual blackness. It is often noted that many of the bands tend to take support of opera-tic, or seduct-ive female vocals ,where the music tends to be atmospheric, but Varathron doesnt. Necroabyssious has given a remarkable performance, and there is this strange power in his words, that are so pushy, and visionary in the dark. His vocals surely stand powerful. Unisound records do not fail in Productivity but i think Promotional effort to the cd is not kept to the mark, Its great to know that Pagan records have released their next mcd " The Lament Of Gods" which is another killer! Again, it becomes a difficult task to cross out favourite tracks, when Walpurgisnacht is such a great listen. I did get my hands on this masterpiece many years back, but still when i play this album, its non stop! Beg Borrow Steal , This jewel is not to be missed !
