Ancient Black metal winds from Norway once again.This time its flowing from the dark legions of Carpathian Forest. Most of us know this still living legendary black metal band by their classic efforts like " Strange old Brew" and " Black Shining leather" which have been given many top ranking reviews.But for those blacksouls who are new to them..this mcd shall be the right pick to get a grip of what Cf. has really to burn down. Carpathian Forest had its beginning as far back as 1990, formed by R. Nattefrost (aka Lord Nosferatu) and J. Nordavind (aka Lord Karnstein). They released their now legendary demo "Bloodlust & Perversion" in 1992 and "Journey Through The Cold Moors of Svarttjern" (aka Promo 1993) in 1993. This immediately launched them into pure cult status within the underground, among those devoted to the true Norwegian Death & Black Metal scene. Following then, this classic Mcd "Through Chasm, Caves and Titan Woods" in 1995 paved its way in by Avantgarde Music.Their music has been following an obscure path made of obsessive, morbid and grim sounds which are to this day a sort of trademark for the band. "Carpathian Forest" is the first track and its got a thrash black metal finish to it, The same feel goes with the second one. Very midpaced but keeping it groovy and surely expected touches of melodic solos not kept long but, are noticed. Technical soloin scars are left behing with the leads as well. On the whole the style kept is midpaced,atmospheric and again in the primitive fashion of playing black metal.You’ll also notice some synths here, but they’re certainly not over-used. The guitars have been butchered by Tchort , reminds me alot like the sound Mayhem,Ancient, Emperor has. Very cold and speedy at times.The drums keep pounding, not all the time though. "The eclipse / the Raven" is a moody melancholy hymn. Acoustic guitar sounds ,synths, bass melo notes And imaginary sound of crows, all clubbed together, this song comes out beautifully. This track is different from any Carpathian forest works. When the music tends to go midpaced and atmospheric , the vocals are given real importance. Nattefrost doesnt lack in skills here and has his job done perfectly. Its awesome, its delivered with black metal cry outs with echoes joining his vocal lines.The track to listen to is "Journey through the cold moors of Svarttjern" to grade his unmatched throating which is the last track in this mcd. This track has again classic acoustic guitar arrangements and its played in more Viking Metal kinda style! These guys have so much to offer! 5 tracks in all and ending up at approx. 19 mins. does give a rough idea about the average length of each track. Such a great listen.. should have been longer!!!! This mcd does not have the same style of music going on, there are many interesting switches and turns here , further ranking the entire Mcd a top notch buy. On the contrary, this disc differs alot to the new material by Carpathian forest. Through Chasm, Caves And Titan Woods is indeed a great mix of old-school black metal epic, power & majestic atmospheres which makes this a release with a lot of variety. Cult never dies.. this has to be the Mcd ….. "When thousand moon have circled".
