Mayhem – Grand Declaration Of War

Mayhem - Grand Declaration Of War Everybody has heard of Mayhem :- They were the forerunners of the whole black metal scene- great; They are strongly against Christianity – cool; They have been involved in tons of controversies- amazing; They hit the headlines when Dead committed suicide and more when Count Grishnack murdered Euronymous – holy shit; They’re bad, they’re evil, they hate mankind ("I have feelings – but, not for such unreasonable things as humans") and they’re generally out for blood – hey, I couldn’t ask for more – could I? What about the music? – The music: hmm.. well.. ah.. Why do you bother about the music? – They’re EVIL – just concentrate on that; To cut the crap and get to business, the music of this album -to put it bluntly – is WEIRD (one word which kind of sums it all). I couldn’t get a Black Metal Feel out of it at all. Neither is it reminiscent of the old school black metal (a la Enslaved, Darkthrone) nor the new one (a la COF, Dimmu, etc.). The guitars have an industrial / punk tone. This latest offering from the so-called gods of Black Metal literally sucks – and it sucks big time. The songs sound like a random assimilation of chord progressions (can’t even call them riffs). The vocals are either a diarrhoea of words (extremely weak uttering) or occasional death-metal-ish growls (which are good). None of the songs are particularly memorable. To top it all, there are electronica-infused vocals at parts. It reminded me of the small robot, which used to come in the pathetic TV serial "Sigma" and say: "Attention; Aage Khatra Hai!" Flashes of brilliance in the sea of ugliness : The tile song: the lyrics were particularly good. View from Nihil: I liked the growling very much on this song- music is ok. Completion in Science of Agony(Pt 1): Has some decent drumming. (In fact, drumming sounds good in different "rare" occasions on the album). To Daimonian(Pt1): Except for the disgusting Electronica-type Vox at beginning, this is a pretty decent song. However, overall, this is a pretty disappointing album (supposed to be the worst offering from Mayhem so far). Definitely not recommended for people who are yet to start listening to Mayhem.
